When LED lights are used with a dimmable driver, issues such as flickering, no light output, or reduced brightness are not always caused by the LED lights themselves. Input power, the dimmable driver, output wiring, LED load, thermal conditions, and control signals can all affect lighting performance.

Based on Shengchang’s experience in lighting projects, troubleshooting should start with the actual lighting symptom, then move through the input, output, load, temperature, and control conditions step by step. Any power-off operation or high-voltage measurement should be performed by qualified electrical professionals.

1. LED Lights Keep Flickering

The timing and pattern of flickering can point to different troubleshooting directions.

01 | Flickering Immediately After Power-On

If the lights start flickering as soon as power is applied, first check whether the input power is stable.

Then check the dimmable driver output wiring and LED load. Pay attention to loose connections, poor contact, output short circuits, overload, or load mismatch.

After correcting the issue, power on again and check whether the flickering stops.

02 | Flickering After Running for a While

If the lights start normally but begin flickering after running for some time, especially as temperature rises, check the operating temperature and protection status.

Check the installation space, ambient temperature, and heat dissipation. If the operating temperature is too high, improve heat dissipation and observe the light again.

If the issue remains, continue checking the driver output and LED operating conditions.

03 | Regular “On → Off → On → Off”

This pattern may indicate that the dimmable driver is repeatedly entering a protection cycle.

When conditions such as output short circuit or overload persist, some dimmable drivers may enter hiccup mode: the output shuts down, waits for a period, then restarts and repeats the cycle.

Check the output wiring and LED load first. Protection and reset methods vary by product, so refer to the product specifications.

04 | Flickering Only During Dimming

If flickering occurs only during dimming, focus on the control path.

Check whether the control signal is stable, and verify the dimming range, load requirements, and compatibility between the controller, dimmable driver, and LED load.

If the power supply and load are normal, check the control settings and dimming method.

2. LED Lights Do Not Turn On

Use the sequence input → output → load to narrow down the problem.

01 | Lights Do Not Turn On After Power-On

First, measure the dimmable driver input and confirm that the upstream power supply and input wiring are normal.

Then check the output wiring and LED load for poor contact, short circuit, or overload. Correct the issue and power on again.

02 | Input Is Normal, but the Dimmable Driver Has No Output

Measure the driver output directly to confirm whether there is actually no output.

If the output is abnormal, check for short circuit, overload, or over-temperature protection. Also verify that the dimming control is working properly.

03 | No Output After External Issues Are Resolved

Check whether the dimmable driver has entered latch mode or another protection state.

For products with latch mode, the fault must usually be removed before the driver can be reset according to the specified reset method.

If the driver output has returned to normal but the lights remain off, check the LED load and wiring, including internal connections and related driver circuits.

3. LED Lights Become Dimmer

First determine whether the lights are dim from startup or become dimmer after running. The troubleshooting direction is different for each case.

01 | Lights Are Dim Immediately After Power-On

Start with the relationship between input, output, and load.

Measure the input voltage and check whether the dimmable driver output voltage or current is within the normal range. Confirm that the LED load matches the driver ratings.

If the power and output are normal, check the dimming level, control signal, and dimming range for incorrect control settings.

02 | Brightness Gradually Decreases During Operation

If brightness decreases as operating time increases, focus on temperature.

Check the operating temperature of the dimmable driver and LED lights, as well as the installation space and heat dissipation conditions.

If the driver supports over-temperature derating, check the temperature and output status to determine whether derating has been triggered. Heat buildup in the LED lights should also be considered.

Improve heat dissipation and observe the brightness again.

03 | Only Some Lights or Areas Become Dim

Compare a normal light with the affected one. Check the input, output, wiring, and load conditions of both.

Pay particular attention to wiring issues, voltage drop, poor contact, and load differences.

If the dimmable driver output is normal but individual lights or areas remain dim, further check the power wiring, voltage at the LED input, LED load, and internal connections.

After resolving the issue, power on again and confirm whether the brightness has returned to normal.

Conclusion

LED troubleshooting should start with when and how the abnormality occurs, then move through the power supply, dimmable driver, wiring, load, thermal conditions, and control system step by step.

Identifying the conditions behind the symptom and locating the affected part of the system can reduce unnecessary troubleshooting and component replacement, making fault diagnosis more efficient.
